Fading
The loss of color due to exposure to light, heat or weathering.

Fauteuil
French upholstered arm chair which, unlike the Bergere, has open spaces between the arms and seat.

Ferrule
Metal ring or cup, turned or square, fitting the foot of a leg for strength and ornament.

Fiddle
A chair splat shaped in manner of the violin’s contour.

Filigree
Interlaced wire-work decoration of scrolls and arabesques.

Filling
Same as weft yarn in weaving. The yarn which interlaces at right angles with the warp yarn.

Film
Layer or coat of paint or other material applied to a surface.

Finial
A decorative finishing device, usually foliated, for the terminals of projecting uprights.

Finish Coat
The last coat of paint or other finish.

Fit
In a printed fabric the relative location of the elements of a design. Fabrics are either in-fit or, out-of-fit. Corresponds to registration for printed wallpapers.

Fitch Edge Tool
A small stippling brush used to apply glaze to difficult-to-reach areas. Used with the Ralph Lauren Antiqued Leather Technique.

Flaking
A form of paint failure characterized by the detachment of small pieces of the film from the surface of the previous coat of paint.

Flashing
The development of uneven gloss resulting from underlying variable porosity or high humidity on the top of the paint while drying.

Fleur-De-lis
A French emblem in the form of a conventionalized floral design.

Flitch
Part of a log that is sawed into veneers; the bundle of consecutive sheets of veneers when cut.

Floating
Separation of pigment colors on the surface of applied paint.

Fluting
Hollows or channels cut on any horizontal or perpendicular surface. The ridge between the flutes is a fillet.

Foliated
Decorated with leaf designs of an intricate pattern.

Framing
Brushing around the edges of a room as well as trim, light switches, outlets, etc., prior to rolling or spraying.

Fret
A kind of Greek ornament formed of bands or fillets variously combined. A piece of perforated ornamental work.

Frieze
In architecture, the entablature between the architrave and cornice. The term is applied to the broad border which sometimes runs around the top of a room or a cabinet.

Fungicide
An agent that helps prevent mold or mildew growth on paint.
